That mix is the point: this is a neighborhood garden that happens to sit near the hall, not a venue built for conventions.
When are the specials, and what happens each night of the week?
Happy hour at Shaw runs all day on Mondays (excluding holidays), 4pm to 7pm Tuesday through Thursday, and until 1pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Around it, each weekday has its own program, all of them posted on the Shaw location page.
Mondays: all-day specials and games
All-day specials plus card and board games in the garden. The site frames it as the way to shake off the Monday blues, and for a show that opens on a Tuesday it is the arrival-night option.
Wednesdays: Run Club, 6:30 to 7:30 PM
The group meets at Dacha, runs a 5K around the McMillan Reservoir, and comes back to the garden for extended specials. Once a month the route starts at the White House and finishes back at the garden.
Thursdays: Yappy Hour
The weekly dog-friendly Yappy Hour: $2 off Tito's cocktails, including the Tito's Cherry Limeade, and free pup cups for the dogs all day. Through the season the garden hosts rescue groups and pet-themed paint-and-sip nights.
Sundays: Sunday Funday
The specials run from 11 AM to 1 PM, then $5 Absolut vodka drinks and $5 High Noon seltzers all day. For a weekend show, it is the early-exit plan.
Groups, receptions and organizer dinners: how do the Loft and garden events work?
Dacha Loft is the private event space above the Shaw beer garden. The site describes it as easy to get to but feeling far away, and lists the formats it hosts: seated dinners, receptions and team meetings, alongside rehearsal dinners, all-hands meetings and corporate retreats. It is the option for the part of a conference that should not happen at a shared table: a sponsor dinner, a board reception, a team meeting the evening before the show opens.
The Loft accommodates seated dinners for up to 40 guests, standing receptions for up to 60 and team meetings for up to 40. Confirm the final room layout with the events team. The garden itself is bookable for larger, free-flowing gatherings such as networking receptions, alumni reunions and client appreciation occasions, and the private events page lists its capacity at 250 guests.
Two rules matter for planning. Garden events get guaranteed space for up to 3 hours, and because of the communal-style seating each garden event must start by 6pm Monday to Friday and by 1pm on weekends and holidays. Groups of up to 30 reserve on Resy, groups of 11 and more are secured with a card on file, and larger events go through the private events page.
Capital One Arena nights: is Dacha Shaw a bar near the arena?
Capital One Arena is on F Street NW, downtown, and Shaw sits just north of it on the same Green and Yellow Metro lines that serve Shaw-Howard U and Mt. Vernon Square. Bars right at the arena fill and empty with the building; a beer garden a short ride or walk up the line is where the part of the crowd that wants to sit down ends up.
Two dates to plan around this fall: the Washington Capitals open at home on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, and the Washington Wizards open their season on October 20, 2026. On a weeknight the garden is open until 10:30pm, so an evening game leaves room for one round before; on a Friday or Saturday it runs until midnight, which leaves room for the round after.
