What Is Dacha Shaw's Oktoberfest Celebration?
Dacha Beer Garden Shaw is hosting its Oktoberfest kickoff on Saturday, September 19th beginning at 12 PM. The afternoon opens with a ceremonial keg tapping in partnership with Weihenstephan, the Bavarian brewery, followed by two free competitions on the patio in Shaw, Washington DC.
A pretzel eating competition runs from 2–3 PM and a boot holding competition runs from 3–4 PM. All events are free to join, and guests who want to compete can RSVP or DM Dacha Shaw directly to sign up.
The Weihenstephan Ceremonial Keg Tapping
The event opens at noon with a ceremonial keg tapping featuring Weihenstephan. It is a fitting start to an Oktoberfest afternoon at an outdoor beer garden in Shaw, Washington DC, where draft beer is central to the experience.
Guests who arrive wearing a dirndl or lederhosen receive a free beer poured from the ceremonial Weihenstephan keg. No purchase is required for that perk beyond the costume itself.
Pretzel Eating and Boot Holding: Free Competitions All Afternoon
Two ticketed competitions fill the early afternoon on the Dacha Shaw patio. Entry to both is free, keeping the Oktoberfest afternoon accessible to everyone stopping by the beer garden near U Street and Howard University.
The pretzel eating competition takes place from 2–3 PM, and the boot holding competition follows from 3–4 PM. DM Dacha Shaw to register as a participant in either contest.

12 PM: Ceremonial Keg Tapping with Weihenstephan
The afternoon begins with an official keg tapping in partnership with Weihenstephan. Guests in dirndl or lederhosen receive a free beer from this keg.
2–3 PM: Pretzel Eating Competition

3–4 PM: Boot Holding Competition
The classic Oktoberfest endurance test. Free to join. DM Dacha Shaw to sign up before September 19th.
